Fortunately, depression is one of the most treatable mental disorders. In fact, 80% to 90% of patients respond to treatment, and almost all experience relief of their symptoms. The diagnosis of depression is made by a health care professional after a detailed physical examination and interview. Blood tests may be ordered to rule out medical causes of depression, which would help alleviate symptoms. During an evaluation, a health care professional will explore specific symptoms, the patient’s family history, and cultural and environmental factors.

If you suspect you may be suffering from depression, consult your physician as soon as possible. Many primary care doctors are trained to recognize the symptoms of depression, and screenings can be part of routine doctor visits. If symptoms persist, ask your doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist. By seeking treatment as soon as possible, you will significantly improve your chances of recovery. If you have been diagnosed with depression, your doctor will be able to prescribe a therapy that will treat the underlying problem.

Antidepressants are the most commonly prescribed medications for depression, and they may improve the levels of brain chemicals that control stress and mood. But antidepressants have many side effects and are not always the best solution for depression. Your doctor may prescribe a combination of different antidepressants to help you feel better and reduce the chance of relapse. Some antidepressants may even cause dangerous heart rhythm problems in children, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about which one is right for you.

While the cause of depression is unknown, genetics do play a role in its development. People inherit either one or the other gene from their parents, and the shorter one is more likely to experience depression. Other genetic factors are also linked to the development of depression, including a family history of mental illness, substance use disorders, learning disabilities, and other health issues. Interestingly, many people with depression do not experience any of these factors. They may simply be more susceptible to stress and low self-esteem.

The treatment of depression varies from person to person, and it is important to seek the right kind of therapy for you. Psychotherapy is the most effective way to address the problem. In a couple of sessions, a therapist can help you work through issues that affect your relationship. It is also possible to choose an NHS-funded psychotherapy program if you want to avoid paying for private services. Many programs last a few weeks or even months, but patients can see significant improvements in a matter of weeks.

Aside from medications, psychotherapy and light therapy can also help. Some people with depression use psychotherapy and light therapy, as these activities can help them feel better. Light therapy can help regulate the production of melatonin hormone. In addition, a psychiatrist may prescribe medications to help alleviate their symptoms. However, you should also consult a medical professional to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of depression. If you are experiencing depression, it’s important to seek treatment for both conditions, to ensure your mental health stays stable.
