Various types of therapy are available for people who suffer from depression. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps people understand how certain thoughts and behaviors contribute to their state of depression. Couples and family therapy also work to solve common issues that cause depression. Other types of therapy, such as problem-solving therapy, help people focus on specific goals and increase positive interactions with the environment. Regardless of the type of therapy you choose, there are some basic principles that all form the basis of successful treatment.
The Mayo Clinic studies the effectiveness of different treatments for depression to help people live better. In addition to examining symptoms and family history, the Mayo Clinic recommends undergoing various tests. These tests help rule out other conditions and medications that can cause similar symptoms. These tests may also help doctors to determine whether a specific type of treatment will benefit the patient. People with depression should not attempt to stop taking their prescribed medications without consulting a physician. Using alternative treatments is not meant to replace conventional medical treatment.
In general, depression can occur at any age. It is now recognized that depression can also affect children. Many chronic mood disorders that occur in adults start in childhood as high levels of anxiety. Moreover, depression can co-occur with other serious medical conditions. Medications for one of these conditions can exacerbate the symptoms of depression. It is therefore important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible to reduce the risk of developing a depressive disorder. And remember, the sooner you treat depression, the better your chances of a full recovery.
Some natural medicines for depression have been proven to be effective. For instance, St. John’s wort is the most popular botanical product. However, the FDA has not approved this product for treating depression. As a result, it should never be taken with prescription antidepressants or without consulting a health care provider. There are also omega-3 fatty acids and S-adenosylmethionine, both of which are under investigation and have not been proven safe for routine use.
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, can also be helpful in the treatment of depression. Various types of psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and problem-solving therapy, are evidence-based and effective. Electroconvulsive therapy is another treatment for depression, and is often the first option in severe cases. There is no guarantee that any particular therapy will work for everyone, but if you have been diagnosed with depression, seek help immediately.
Psychotherapy and medication for depression are also common treatments. Medications such as Zoloft or Paxil can help alleviate the symptoms. Other psychotherapies include cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy. When combined together, these treatments are effective in helping people with severe, complex depression. If none of these options have worked, you may want to try an alternative therapy. A combination of medication and psychotherapy can improve symptoms and prevent the condition from recurring.
