Depression – What is It?

Depression is a disorder that affects your mood and thoughts. It is not a weakness or character flaw, but it is a treatable illness. Depression usually starts because of an imbalance in your brain chemicals. It can be triggered by life events, certain illnesses, or it may start without any clear reason. Depression can be treated with medicine, psychotherapy, or both. It is important to remember that people don’t “snap out of” depression — it takes time to feel better. It’s also helpful to try to do things that make you happy and to be with others as much as possible, and to avoid alcohol and drugs.

The main treatment for depression is medicines that act on your brain’s chemical messengers. These are called antidepressants. You will probably need to take them for 4 to 6 weeks before you begin to feel better. There are many different types of antidepressants, and you will probably have to try a few before you find one that works for you. Your doctor may also give you another type of medication to help with your symptoms, such as a mood stabilizer or an antipsychotic.

There are several kinds of psychotherapy, or talk therapy, that can also be used to treat depression. The most commonly used ones are cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy. They work to change the distorted views that people with depression have about themselves and their situation, and they help people improve relationships and learn healthier ways to deal with stress.

Depression can be a serious and often life-threatening illness. It is important to seek help as soon as you can. You can get better with help from family and friends, a support group, or a mental health professional. Some people can also find relief from taking natural products, such as St. John’s wort or omega-3 fatty acids, although more research is needed.

Depression can affect people of all ages, races, and social classes. It is more common in females and people assigned to the female gender at birth, but it can occur in males as well. It is more likely to happen after a medical problem, such as a stroke, heart attack, or cancer, or after a stressful event, such as divorce or the death of a loved one. It is less common in children and adolescents, but it can occur in them as well. It is also more common in people who are ill with conditions that cause depression, such as a neurological disease or dementia. People who have bipolar disorder sometimes have episodes of depression in addition to manic or hypomanic symptoms. People with fibromyalgia may have depression as well as chronic fatigue and physical pain.
