Depression – What is It and How Can It Be Treated?
Depression is a serious illness that affects how you feel, think and act. It’s more than just feeling sad or down sometimes — it lasts longer and is different from the normal reactions to life’s stressors (like losing a job, having health problems or a relationship breakup).
Depression also interferes with your work and home life, making it difficult to get along with people. The good news is that depression can be treated with medicine or therapy, or a combination of both.
Some types of depression are a part of a medical condition such as heart disease or cancer. But most depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that may run in families.
Mood swings are common in bipolar disorder, which includes manic and depressive episodes. People of all ages can have depression. But it’s more likely to happen in children and teens, women and people assigned female at birth, and those with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
Depression may be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to many other medical conditions. But a mental health professional will do a careful psychiatric exam and ask you about your family history and other issues to check for depression. They will also rule out general medical causes of your mood problems, such as thyroid problems or a vitamin deficiency.
There are many different types of psychological treatment for depression, including cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapy. These therapies help you change the negative thoughts and beliefs that cause you to feel low. They also help you improve your relationships and deal with stress.
Some medications treat depression by changing the levels of certain chemicals in your brain. These are called antidepressants. It can take 4 to 6 weeks for them to begin working, so you should keep taking them even if you don’t feel better right away. If the first medication doesn’t work, your doctor may try another type or a different dose.
Depression can also be treated by talking with a friend or family member, or by joining a support group for people who have depression. It’s important to get help for depression because it can lead to suicide. This is especially true if you have severe or chronic depression.
