Depression – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment For Depression
Depression – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment For Depression
A physical exam and a series of lab tests may indicate depression. A psychiatric evaluation will ask about symptoms, thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns, and may include a questionnaire. Your doctor may also order a blood test to make sure your depression is indeed a mental health issue. The American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 has been proven to be the gold standard for diagnosing and treating depression. While treatment for depression can take weeks, you may see significant improvement within as few as 10 to 15 sessions.
In addition to medication, some doctors recommend psychotherapy. Psychotherapy involves talking to a trained mental health professional about the causes and symptoms of depression. CBT focuses on changing negative thought patterns and responding to stressful situations. Cognitive behavioral therapy involves learning new skills to cope with difficult situations and relationships. Interpersonal therapy involves structured discussions about personal relationships and situations that can trigger depression. Some people may benefit from all three forms of therapy. It’s important to remember that the best way to combat depression is by using both methods.
The symptoms of depression can manifest themselves in many different ways. Some are mental – a person’s thoughts and behavior may be distorted, or they may even be suicidal. There are many other causes of depression, including major life changes like a job loss or the birth of a child. People who have a family history of depression are also more likely to experience this disorder, but sometimes it can occur for no apparent reason. The best way to determine whether you are suffering from depression is to seek treatment.
Medications may be combined with psychotherapy. Combining two antidepressants can help alleviate depression symptoms and increase overall recovery rates. Psychotherapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy. For people with complex or severe depression, combining both types of medications has shown better results. Ultimately, medication can only help with treating symptoms and may not be an effective treatment for depression. In addition to therapy, there are some medications available without a doctor’s advice.
Studies have suggested that some individuals may be genetically predisposed to depression. An international study of over 2 million people linked 269 genes to depression. However, scientists are not sure whether genetics write the destiny, or whether it only increases the risk of depression. Other factors, such as low self-esteem, environmental factors, and stress are also known to increase the risk of depression. Therefore, it is important to understand the difference between depression and grief. If you’re suffering from depression, you may qualify for social security disability insurance benefits.
If you’re feeling depressed, consider postponing important decisions until the symptoms disappear. It may be helpful to discuss these plans with others who know you well. A few changes a day will go a long way in alleviating your symptoms. In the meantime, stay optimistic and focus on the positive aspects of life. As the symptoms of depression disappear, your depression may be cured and you will feel better each day. This is because depression affects the entire body, including your thoughts and feelings.
