Fortunately, depression is one of the most treatable mental disorders. Approximately 80% to 90% of patients respond well to treatment for depression, and many find relief from symptoms. During an initial visit, a health professional should perform a physical exam, a detailed interview, and a blood test to rule out any medical causes. If the causes were found and treated, it would likely eliminate the depression-like symptoms. During the evaluation, the health professional will discuss the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and cultural and environmental factors.

Psychotherapy can take many forms. One approach involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, which works by helping patients identify the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to their depression. A few techniques also focus on family and couples therapy. In a family therapy, for example, members of the family may work on issues together to help each other cope with depression. In group therapy, people with similar illnesses may be grouped together to share their experiences and develop effective coping strategies. Depending on the extent of depression, treatment can take several weeks or months. However, with 10 to 15 sessions, significant improvements are possible.

People suffering from depression often experience difficulty enjoying activities that they used to enjoy. While they may not enjoy these activities anymore, they will probably enjoy them once again once they start to feel better. To overcome this, they can engage in activities that make them feel good. This can include hobbies, exercise, or even doing something nice for someone. Depressed people need to realize that they need time to recover. They should also recognize that depression may take time to improve, and that the condition can recur.

While genetic factors may play a role in susceptibility to depression, other causes are unknown. Known genetic variations have been linked to a higher risk of developing depression. It also has other causes, including poor mental health and substance use. People with genetically-determined depression are at increased risk of developing more episodes later in life, which makes treatment vital. If you are diagnosed with depression, social security disability insurance may be a good option for you.

In addition to therapy, you can also consider medication. Many people with depression benefit from antidepressants, which affect the chemicals in the brain. Although these drugs are FDA-approved, they do come with risks. For this reason, you should talk to your health care provider before taking any medications. If you’ve tried antidepressants and they haven’t helped, your healthcare provider can recommend a different option. You may also want to try psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a treatment option for depression, and many types of therapists specialize in specific approaches.

For people with severe depression, electroconvulsive therapy may be an option. This treatment involves passing a mild electrical current through the brain, triggering seizures that relieve symptoms and restore normal brain chemicals. Patients should notice a difference within a few weeks. In the long term, however, continuing treatment for depression can prevent symptoms from reappearing. Additionally, you should avoid stress and set realistic goals to avoid depression symptoms. If you feel better after treatment, your treatment should be effective and permanent.
